Stickley meets Maloof

P. Michael Henderson

I recently completed this rocker of my own design.  I started with a Craftsman style (or Arts and Crafts style) rocker but modified the design to give it a more modern flavor.  As someone commented about it, it's a "Stickley meets Maloof" rocker.

The major change from the traditional Craftsman ethic is the use of curves (Craftsman furniture is so rectilinear), especially in the side and back slats and the arms.  I also added a sculpted seat and "build-ups" on the rockers where the legs meet the rockers.  But it still has the "flavor" of an Arts and Crafts piece of furniture - I think anyone familiar with Arts and Crafts would identify this as a Craftsman piece of furniture upon first examination.

The curved side slats flow into the arms, giving a sort of upward and outward flow to the piece.

The seat is sculpted from quarter sawn walnut.  Quarter sawn wood was used to minimize wood movement.

The finish is oil-varnish.
